Here to Fall

Irish Film Board

We are mid production of our first animated short on the Irish Film Board's Frameworks scheme. Here to fall is a story is about a girl who is contacted by her absent father. From there we follow the girl through a surreal digital world where she tries to understand their
relationship and how she should deal with her feelings. Although Here to fall will be a computer animated project it will be rendered in a very painterly and hand drawn style.

Compositing

momentum 2.0

Thanks to Helge Mathee we are beta testing Momentum 2.0 in Here to Fall. A number of shots show buildings disintegrating and this is the perfect solution for such an effect within softimage. After breaking up the structure using Kratos, momentum 2.0 makes it really simple to collapse in and around its self.

Ps. Please ignore the robotic run cycle.

Abstract

Gear rig test

One of the most interesting parts of the story to visualize is the form of the father. A Shape shifting void, isnt easy to illustrate, but lots of fun. Here is an early example.

Character Development

Gear rig test

After alot of research into what was going to be our character rigging solution, we have decided to use GEAR, an open source rigging toolset for Softimage by Jeremie Passerin. There was alot of hype surrounding GEAR, for two reasons, GEAR is an incredibly fast robust solution and after 5 years of development by Jeremie Passerin he released it for free.

Shading, Lighting and Rendering

With Here to Fall we want to try something new and find a look that is unique.

Syflex Cloth Simulation

We have just completed our solution for cloth simulation, using syflex and cage deformers. Initially we thought to of using maya's nCloth, but after test found that syflex within softimage was producing results we were looking for. Despite autodesk's improvements in package interoperability it was allways going to be sensible to keep all softimage pipeline.

Concept Art

Storyboard and Beatboard

For submission to Frameworks we needed to provide a Script and a full colour story board. This would mean at the very early stage we would need to rough out the characters in Photoshop, to get an idea of what style we were going for. Although hundreds of illustrations of these character were created their design could change quite considerably before the project has ended.
