Warning! Studio often not this clean….
Well we are starring hard into our second year as the best (ahemm) animation, VFX and all things digital studio in Northern Ireland.
We have had a pretty incredible first year. It was an eye opener, not only to the kind of talented people working in NI at the moment, but also the possibilities out there for local to become global pretty quickly. It’s proven to us that there is plenty of opporutnity and partners for a studio like ours. We aim to create work that stays with the audience, whether is a commercial or a short. We collaborate.
We have to say a big thank you to WeeMan studios for taking a risk and going with BlackNorth on Galctic Racer, both theirs and our inaugural project. And what a project.; a minute long intro sequence for 3D, glorious technicolor, character design and development, story arcs, comic sequecnes, a score! Galactic Racer was quickly followed by a spot for Google, and a commercial for IIBBDO, Bank of Ireland and The Irish Independent. They say never work with children but the one-day shoot went brilliantly. We are emensely proud of the results.
And then to crown a whirlwind few months, BAI ok’d funding for our aniamted short, The Forest of Atrementous Birds, now being rescripted.
Our second short, Here To Fall was selected for the IFB’s Frameworks programe and is in production now, due to premier at the Galway Film Fleadh this summer. We count ourselves very lucky, over two-hundred Director/Producer teams submitted proposals and BlackNorth was one of only four teams selected. The programe, with a history of producing Oscar nominees is incredibly presitgous.
So this year looks as interesting as last. We also have some facts about us.
For instance, we have a techncial infrastructure that provides processing for all data-acquisition activities, shoot, editorial, offline and online colour grading. We used this on YUKI.
We have a High definition 2D and 3D pipeline that supports High dynamic range node based composting in Nuke, non-liner multi threaded 3D workflow in Autodesk Softimage and a 64bit Adobe Creative suite, which is how we aced Rorys’ Story Cubes.
All this really means is that we work to the highest quality and most reliable motion graphics and visual effects workflows possible.
Ev & Kris
Evelyn and Kris are co directors of Black North and have worked together as a co-producer and co-director team for the past four years. They have a passion for creating and collaborating on VFX and animation. Recent work includes Looper, BBC Newsround and Good Vibrations. His work has received international recognition, with prestigious nominations and awards including BAFTA, IFTA, Banff, Prix Jeunesse, and an International Emmy. Recent work for the BBC Newsround series won and RTS craft award for best animation. Here To Fall has won Darklight 2012 - Best Animation and the Don Quixote Prize for Best Animation at the Galway Film Fleadh 2012. Blacknorth offers the whole package, a fully managed production, innovative creative collaboration and film grade technical kit with the know-how to use it.
